Mexico proposes new General Law of Ecological Equilibrium and Environmental Protection
President Claudia Sheinbaum has signed an initiative for a new General Law of Ecological Equilibrium and Environmental Protection, to be sent to the Chamber of Deputies for legislative analysis. This proposal seeks to replace the environmental framework established in 1988, updating it to address modern challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.
Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources Alicia Bárcena Ibarra stated that the new legislation aims to establish a relationship between development, prosperity, and nature based on environmental justice. Key features of the proposal include mechanisms for ecological restoration, environmental repair, and the integration of scientific and technological advances with ancestral knowledge. The law also intends to provide legal certainty for communities and investments regarding socio-environmental conflicts.
Additionally, the initiative introduces strategic environmental assessments for large-scale infrastructure and industrial projects to prevent cumulative regional impacts. It emphasizes prevention, citizen participation, and the protection of the rights of indigenous and Afro-Mexican communities. The reform also includes provisions for circular economy measures, waste reduction, and the protection of coastal and river ecosystems.
