Mexico provides housing aid in Yucatán and a refuge grant in Veracruz for women victims of violence

The state of Yucatán announced a new program that will give women experiencing extreme gender‑based violence up to 7,500 pesos to cover rental costs, with a maximum of 2,500 pesos per month for three months. The aid is available to adult women without income who can prove they are in a high‑risk situation, with priority given to those with disabilities, pregnancy, indigenous background, or other vulnerable conditions. In addition to cash, the program may provide in‑kind assistance such as food, medicine, transport and basic furniture, potentially reaching a total of 40,000 pesos per beneficiary.

Separately, the federal government allocated 7.5 million pesos to the Instituto Veracruzano de las Mujeres to operate a specialized refuge in Veracruz for women victims of gender‑based violence and their children. The grant funds security‑enhanced facilities, confidentiality measures, and a range of services including legal, psychological, social work and health support. The institute must commence operations within 15 days of receiving the funds and submit progress reports, with the project required to close by January 2027.
