Mexico public debt reaches 19 trillion pesos

Mexico's public debt has reached significant new levels as of mid-2026. According to reports from the Secretaría de Hacienda y Crédito Público, the total public debt, measured by the Saldo Histórico de los Requerimientos Financieros del Sector Público (SHRFSP), reached approximately 19 trillion pesos by the end of the second quarter of 2026. This figure represents roughly 51 percent of the nation's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Specifically, the federal government's net external debt has seen a notable increase. Since the start of Claudia Sheinbaum's administration in September 2024, the net external debt rose from 125.7 billion dollars to 157.4 billion dollars by June 2026, an increase of over 31 billion dollars. This external component accounts for 11.1 percent of the GDP, while internal debt constitutes 39.9 percent of the economy.

The Ministry of Finance attributed these fluctuations to several factors, including net external borrowing, changes in international assets, and accounting adjustments resulting from exchange rate volatility. While the debt has grown, the SHCP maintains that the current levels are consistent with responsible fiscal management and aim to keep the debt-to-GDP ratio around 52.3 percent by the end of 2026.
