Mexico public schools face major digital and infrastructure gaps
An analysis by the Mexican Institute for Competitiveness (IMCO), using official data from the Secretariat of Public Education (SEP), reveals significant infrastructure deficiencies in Mexico's public basic education sector. More than half of the country's public schools lack essential digital tools, with 57% lacking internet connectivity and 56% lacking computers for academic activities.
Beyond technology, the report highlights critical shortages in basic services. Approximately 19% of public schools lack access to potable water, 14% lack handwashing infrastructure, and 6% operate without electricity. These gaps in information and communication technologies (ICT) and basic utilities are noted to increase educational inequality and impact the future academic and professional competitiveness of students.
