Mexico-Puebla Highway Hit by Sinkhole and Multiple Fatal Accidents in July 2026

Intense rains on 28 July 2026 caused a sinkhole to open on Avenida Mexico‑Puebla in the municipality of Cuautlancingo, Puebla. The crater trapped a vehicle and prompted flooding and traffic disruptions across several neighborhoods, including Maravillas, Parque Puebla and the auxiliary junction of Santiago Momoxpan.

During the same month, the Mexico‑Puebla highway experienced a spate of serious collisions. Five major accidents were recorded between 8 and 28 July, including the rollover of a white SUV that killed its passenger after the driver fled the scene, a truck overturn that injured multiple people, and a motorcyclist striking a pedestrian warning others of danger. In total, three people died in these incidents, prompting an investigation by the State of Mexico's prosecutor's office.
