Mexico pursues circular economy through design and industrial recycling

Mexico faces a significant waste challenge, with BBVA Research reporting that only 0.4% of materials entering the Mexican economy are recycled or reused, compared to a global average of 7.2%. In response, the interior design sector is increasingly adopting upcycling practices. This approach focuses on reintegrating recovered materials—such as reclaimed wood, stone from demolitions, or restored furniture—into new projects to preserve their original textures and characteristics.

This shift aligns with national efforts by SEMARNAT to develop a strategy for extending resource lifespans through a circular economy.

In the industrial sector, Grupo DEACERO has implemented a circular production model, manufacturing steel using 97% recycled ferrous raw material. In 2025, the company recycled 3.3 million tons of steel using electric arc furnaces. The company is also working toward certifying products under the ISO 14068-1 standard to reduce environmental impact and has optimized logistics by moving 45% of its products via rail to lower emissions.
