Mexico pushes housing welfare program with new construction targets and women loan scheme

The Mexican Secretariat of Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development (Sedatu) reported that 604,000 homes have been contracted to start construction and 274,000 are already being built, representing 33.6% of the six‑year goal of 1.8 million units. The program, part of the Programa de Vivienda para el Bienestar (PVB), has so far benefited 2.1 million people. In addition, more than 5 million households have received improved credit terms from Infonavit and FOVISSSTE, with 579,000 credits for home improvements and 293,000 property deeds issued.

Infonavit alone has 460,000 homes contracted, with 191,000 under construction, and plans to begin works on 140,227 units between June and July and another 128,536 between August and September, targeting 700,000 contracts this year. Meanwhile, FOVISSSTE launched the "FOVISSSTE Mujeres" program, offering women public‑sector workers and pensioners loans of up to 1.5 million pesos at preferential rates of 2%‑3.5% to purchase, build, or improve a home, with specific eligibility criteria outlined for traditional and pensioner credit schemes.
