Mexico reports sharp drop in homicides as security strategy bears fruit

President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that the State of Mexico saw a 58 % decline in daily homicides, falling from 6.6 cases in September 2024 to 2.8 in June 2026 – the lowest level in 19 years. She credited the result to the coordinated security plan that includes the Mando Unificado and intensified intelligence, investigations and police operations.

In Sonora, authorities recorded zero homicides on 21 July 2026, marking the lowest national figure in eight years and a 63 % reduction in the state’s daily homicide average between September 2024 and June 2026. The governor’s Mesa Estatal de Seguridad attributes the trend to the same multi‑agency coordination.

Jalisco exited the national top‑10 list for deliberate homicides, ranking 11th in the first half of 2026, while Mexico City reported a 64 % cut in high‑impact crimes since 2019 and its lowest homicide count since 2015. Nationwide, only 21 homicides were registered on 21 July, the lowest daily total in many years.

Overall, federal, state and municipal forces report thousands of arrests, hundreds of weapons seized and over a thousand kilograms of drugs confiscated, underscoring the broader impact of the security strategy across the country.
