Claudia Sheinbaum reports historic drop in Mexican homicides amid security strategy

President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that on 21 July 2026 Mexico recorded only 21 homicides, the lowest daily total in many years. The figure follows a national decline of 46 % in intentional homicides since September 2024, when daily averages were around 87 cases. In the State of Mexico, daily homicides fell 58 % from 6.6 to 2.8 per day between September 2024 and June 2026, marking the lowest level in 19 years. Sonora reported a 63 % reduction in daily homicides between September 2024 and June 2026 and recorded zero homicides on 21 July, the lowest national daily count in eight years. The government attributes the trend to the four‑axis National Security Strategy—addressing root causes, strengthening the National Guard, enhancing intelligence and investigations, and improving coordination through the Unified Command. High‑impact crimes also declined: vehicle thefts fell by more than 50 % and arrests for major offenses exceeded 3 300 nationwide.

State-level reports echo the trend, with Jalisco exiting the top‑ten list for homicide rates and highlighting a “white‑balance” security operation during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The reductions are presented as evidence of the strategy’s effectiveness across Mexico.
