Mexico recorded over 20,000 fetal deaths in 2025, INEGI reports

Mexico recorded 20,741 fetal deaths during 2025, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI). The national rate was 58.9 deaths per 100,000 women of childbearing age (15 to 49 years).

Approximately 80.5% of these deaths occurred before childbirth, while 18.3% occurred during labor or delivery. The primary causes identified were maternal factors and complications during pregnancy, labor, and delivery, accounting for 45.6% of cases. Perinatal disorders represented 24.8% of the total.

Regional data shows significant variation. San Luis Potosí recorded the highest rate at 81.3 deaths per 100,000 women, followed by Mexico City (81.0) and Durango (80.2). In terms of absolute numbers, Estado de México reported the highest total with 3,823 deaths, followed by Mexico City with 2,068 and Guanajuato with 1,391. Conversely, states like Oaxaca, Campeche, and Sinaloa reported some of the lowest rates.

The report highlights that many cases are identified through complementary digital records from the Ministry of Health, which helps uncover deaths that might otherwise go unrecorded by traditional civil registry systems.
