Mexico reform for firefighter funding faces potential legal challenges

In Mexico, a proposed reform to guarantee public funding for fire departments faces potential legal challenges. Deputy Rubén Guajardo Barrera warned that the initiative, which seeks to require 59 municipalities to allocate portions of their budgets to fire services, could be challenged in the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN).

The primary concern is the potential violation of municipal financial autonomy as recognized by Article 115 of the Federal Constitution. Because fire departments are not formally part of municipal administrations despite their collaborative emergency work, Guajardo suggests that forcing budget allocations could trigger constitutional controversies. He has called for dialogue with proponents to find an alternative that increases resources for firefighters by 2027 without creating legal conflicts.
