Mexico regulators warn of bank account blocks for unauthorized deposits

The National Commission for the Protection and Defense of Financial Services Users (Condusef) cautioned that lending a personal bank account to receive deposits from third parties can result in the account being blocked, investigations by authorities, tax problems and difficulty opening new accounts. The warning, issued by Condusef delegate Sharon Albornoz in Veracruz, noted a rise in complaints during April‑May, especially among people aged 18‑30, who often accept deposits and later transfer the money to others. Banks may flag unexplained income, alert the authorities and restrict access to the account.

Separately, the Mexican tax authority (SAT) can immobilize bank accounts only under the conditions set out in article 156‑Bis of the Federal Fiscal Code. Immobilization is allowed when a firm tax credit exists that cannot be contested, or when the debt is being challenged without sufficient guarantee. The law does not permit automatic or discretionary blocking of accounts for large deposits or late filings.
