Mexico 2025 mortality: Heart disease and diabetes lead causes of death

Preliminary data from INEGI indicates that Mexico recorded 762,494 deaths in 2025, marking a return to mortality levels seen prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. The national crude mortality rate was 584 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, a decrease from 2024.

Chronic and degenerative diseases remain the primary drivers of mortality. Heart disease was the leading cause of death nationwide, followed by diabetes mellitus and malignant tumors. Together, these three conditions account for nearly half of all recorded deaths. Other significant causes include liver disease and accidents, which resulted in 38,166 fatalities.

Gender differences were notable in mortality patterns: men accounted for 55.9% of total deaths, with higher incidences of accidents and homicides. Women accounted for 44% of deaths, with higher rates of influenza and pneumonia. Homicidies in Mexico saw a 16.6% decrease compared to 2024, totaling 27,989 cases. Additionally, 8,846 suicides were recorded, 80% of which were men.

Regionally, Chihuahua recorded the highest standardized mortality rate in the country, while Campeche recorded the lowest. In Puebla, diabetes mortality was significantly higher than the national average.
