Mexico reports 10% decrease in livestock rabies cases
Mexico's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (AGRICULTURA) has reported a 10% reduction in paralytic rabies cases among livestock during the first half of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. According to data from the National Service for Agri-Food Health, Safety and Quality (Senasica), 251 cases were recorded in livestock, including 244 bovines, five equines, and two caprines. Additionally, 22 cases were identified in wildlife, involving species such as bats, buffalo, and foxes.
To combat the virus, Senasica operates the National Campaign for the Prevention and Control of Rabies in Bovines and Livestock. This initiative involves monitoring suspicious animals, conducting official laboratory diagnoses through the National Center for Animal Health Diagnostic Services (Cenasa), and promoting nationwide vaccination. In the first half of 2026, approximately 648,000 vaccine doses were administered to at-risk livestock.
