Mexico reports 1,270 trailer thefts and 15 driver deaths in first half of 2026
In the first six months of 2026, Mexico’s cargo‑transport sector recorded the violent robbery of 1,270 trailer units and the killing of 15 truck operators, according to Rómulo Mejía Durán, vice‑president of the National Chamber of Cargo Transportation (Canacar).
The highest numbers of thefts occurred in the State of Mexico and Puebla, followed by Veracruz, Michoacán, San Luis Potosí and Jalisco. Mejía warned that the wave of crime has deepened the driver shortage, estimating a deficit of 90,000 operators nationwide, and urged authorities to improve road security to protect families and maintain the flow of goods across the country.
