Mexico reports 2.8% unemployment rate amid labor participation shifts

According to the National Occupation and Employment Survey (ENOE), Mexico's unemployment rate reached 2.8% in September. While the rate reflects a monthly decrease of 0.2 percentage points, analysts note complexities regarding labor participation.

Labor participation fell to 58.5%, a reduction of 0.8 percentage points from the previous month, marking its lowest level in seven months. Experts suggest this decline may indicate a loss of dynamism in the labor market rather than purely positive growth. Specifically, a reduction of 717,972 employed persons and a decrease of 125,029 in unemployment figures contributed to the rate change. Analysts from Monex and ¿Cómo Vamos? pointed out that a lower unemployment rate can sometimes result from individuals ceasing to search for work, thereby exiting the economically active population.

Despite these participation challenges, reports indicate that Mexico recorded approximately 59.9 million employed persons, representing 97.2% of the Economically Active Population (PEA). This high employment rate places the country at the top of the G-20 in terms of employment rate, surpassing nations such as the United States, Germany, and Japan. The workforce is largely concentrated in the services sector, which accounts for 64.7% of employed individuals.
