Spain reports 358 occupational fatalities in first half of the year
Data from the Ministry of Labor and Social Economy indicates that 358 workers died in occupational accidents during the first half of the year, a slight decrease of 5 deaths compared to the same period in 2025.
Of these fatalities, 290 occurred during the workday and 68 were 'in itinere' (commuting). The leading causes of death during work hours were natural causes, such as heart attacks and strokes (119 cases), followed by falls (51) and crushing or amputations (49). The service sector recorded the highest number of deaths (139), while the construction and agriculture sectors showed the highest incidence rates.
In June, the USO union highlighted a lack of prevention regarding extreme heatwaves. Despite record temperatures in parts of Spain, 65 work-related deaths were recorded in June, nearly identical to the previous year. The union noted that official statistics do not currently include a specific category for heat-related deaths, which may mask the impact of thermal stress.
Regional reports show varying trends: Cantabria saw 7 deaths in the first half of the year, a significant increase from zero in the previous year, while Castilla-La Mancha experienced a 23.8% increase in fatal accidents during the same period.
