Mexico reports 64.9% of territory free from drought

According to the Mexico Drought Monitor from the National Meteorological Service (SMN), 64.9% of the country's surface is currently free from drought effects. This comes as the 2026 rainy season approaches its official conclusion in approximately one month.

During the first half of October 2026, above-average rainfall was recorded in the northeast, center-west, center, and southern regions. These conditions were driven by low-pressure channels, the monsoon trough, tropical wave number 42, and the influence of tropical storm Isaías, as well as hurricanes Simón and Trudy. In Baja California, rainfall was linked to Cold Front number 2 and hurricane Rachel.

These weather patterns helped reduce abnormally dry areas and moderate-to-extreme drought in parts of Chihuahua, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas, with Tamaulipas notably eliminating extreme drought. Conversely, rainfall below the historical average was observed in the eastern region and specific areas of the northwest. Some southern states, including Guerrero, Oaxaca, Chiapas, and Tabasco, saw increases in moderate and severe drought as recent rains were insufficient to reverse previous deficits.
