Mexico reports 6,939 located persons amid rising disappearance concerns

Mexican authorities have located 6,939 individuals previously listed in the National Registry of Disappeared and Unlocated Persons (RNPDNO). Data analysis from the Single Identity Platform (PUI) revealed that these individuals had engaged in administrative or financial activities after their reported disappearance dates. Upon verification, many confirmed they were merely absent for a period rather than missing, or were unaware they had been included in the registry.

In the state of Tamaulipas, the situation remains critical. Official records indicate 14,072 missing persons as of September 2026. However, search collectives warn that the actual figure could be double that amount. Activists report that many families refrain from filing official complaints due to fear of reprisals and a lack of trust in authorities. In Reynosa alone, collectives report approximately 500 cases of forced disappearance and 100 kidnappings annually.
