Mexico reports decline in insecurity and significant reduction in homicides

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum reported significant improvements in national security metrics. According to data from INEGI’s National Survey of Victimization and Perception of Public Security (ENVIPE), the perception of insecurity in localities fell from 50.6% in 2019 to 35.9% in 2026. Similarly, the perception of insecurity in municipalities decreased from 70.5% in 2019 to 60.9% in 2026.

Regarding violent crime, Sheinbaum stated that intentional homicides have been reduced by approximately half over the last two years of her administration, with the daily homicide rate reaching 40 by the end of September. Additionally, the Ministry of Women reported a 36% decrease in the daily average of femicides compared to 2021 levels.

On the international stage, United Nations representatives recognized Mexico’s progress in strengthening its legal framework to prevent, investigate, and sanction femicide, specifically noting the inclusion of gender perspectives.

In economic news, the President highlighted that formal employment continues to grow, supported by public infrastructure and housing investment. The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) reported a record 22,927,276 affiliated workers as of September 2026.
