Mexico reports decrease in forest fire damage for 2026
Mexico has seen a significant reduction in the surface area affected by forest fires during 2026 compared to the previous year. So far, fires have consumed approximately 438,411.8 hectares, which is about one-third of the area damaged during 2025.
The National Forestry Commission (Conafor) attributed this decrease to winter rains and spring humidity in certain regions. Total recorded fires amount to 5,299, nearly 2,000 fewer than the previous year. To manage emergencies, Conafor maintains a permanent force of 1,700 combatants, supported by 280 brigades and 2,800 additional personnel from various agencies.
Efforts are concentrated in Jalisco, Estado de México, Ciudad de México, Oaxaca, Durango, and Chihuahua. Authorities are also monitoring forest pests, such as mistletoe and bark beetles, whose behavior is shifting due to climate change. These issues will be discussed at the National Forestry Fair in Zapopan, Jalisco, on September 4 and 5.
