Sinaloa addresses rising internal displacement and security crisis
New data from Inegi reveals that 509,917 households in Mexico have been forced to displace internally due to criminal violence or insecurity, while another 151,852 were displaced by natural or human-made catastrophes. States such as Guerrero, Morelos, and Baja California Sur report displacement rates significantly higher than the national average.
In Sinaloa, interim governor Graciela Domínguez Nava has announced plans to update the state's registry of displaced families, noting that the current count of 3,619 families likely underrepresents the true scale of the crisis due to widespread distrust of institutions. To address security concerns, 20,000 federal security elements have been deployed across the state, with priority given to Culiacán, Escuinapa, Mazatlán, and Navolato.
The displacement has also impacted education; the Sinaloa Secretary of Public Education and Culture reported that while 90 percent of schools maintain in-person instruction, violence in municipalities like Concordia and Badiraguato has necessitated virtual learning plans to ensure students do not lose academic progress. In Mazatlán, the government has begun providing direct aid, including the delivery of 60 housing lots to displaced families.
