Mexico reports men account for 80% of suicides
In Mexico, men account for approximately 80.6% of all suicides, according to 2023 data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI). Out of 9,072 recorded suicides, the vast majority were male, with the highest concentrations occurring in the 15-24 and 25-34 age groups.
Mental health specialists warn that traditional models of masculinity—which often discourage emotional expression—contribute to male depression remaining invisible. Unlike typical presentations of sadness, depression in men frequently manifests as irritability, constant anger, social isolation, excessive work hours, substance abuse, sleep disturbances, or physical ailments. These symptoms are often misidentified by families and medical professionals, delaying necessary intervention.
