Mexico reports over 5,000 clandestine graves since 2006

A report by the Universidad Iberoamericana, titled ‘Trazar la ausencia, caminar la esperanza’, reveals that over 5,152 clandestine graves have been documented in Mexico between 2006 and September 2024.

The study highlights discrepancies between official and media records. While state prosecutors reported 5,152 graves and 5,718 bodies, media documentation recorded 3,516 graves but identified significantly more human remains, totaling over 52,000.

The report also notes a shift in the geographic concentration of violence across different presidential administrations. Findings from 2006 to 2012 were primarily in northern states like Chihuahua and Tamaulipas. Between 2013 and 2018, they shifted to Veracruz, Guerrero, and Jalisco. During the 2019-2024 period, findings concentrated in Sonora, Guanajuato, and Colima.

Additionally, the investigation identified 58 clandestine graves linked to potential femicides between 2020 and 2024, involving 92 women. Approximately 60.7% of these graves were located on private property, a factor that researchers say complicates search efforts due to the legal requirements for accessing private land.
