Mexico reports record low vehicle theft and rising equipment loss costs for mid-sized firms
A recent report by Samsara shows that medium-sized operations in Mexico lose an average of 230 million pesos each year due to untracked equipment theft. Seventy‑one percent of firms without asset visibility experience quarterly theft, and 72 % of the hidden costs stem from small items valued under 170,000 pesos such as tools and sensors. One‑quarter of new‑equipment budgets are spent on replacing stolen assets.
In parallel, the Mexican Association of Insurance Institutions (AMIS) announced that insured vehicle theft fell to its lowest level in five years, with 50,891 units stolen between July 2025 and June 2026 – a 16.2 % decline from the previous period. Coordinated security actions among federal, state and local authorities, along with the insurance sector, contributed to the drop, especially in the State of Mexico, which saw a 22.5 % reduction despite still recording the highest number of thefts. The share of violent robberies fell to 53 % of all cases, the lowest since 2021, and heavy‑vehicle theft decreased to 8,246 units with recovery rates improving to 61 %.
