Mexico reports strong formal employment growth in Baja California and Mexico City

Mexico has seen significant growth in formal employment according to recent data from the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS). Baja California led the nation in growth rates between August 2025 and August 2026, recording an 8.3% increase in affiliated workers. This rate is more than five times the national average of 1.5%.

Mexico City remains the leader in total volume of formal employment, with 3,689,815 registered workers. The capital has maintained sustained growth over the last three months, adding 115,222 registrations between May and August 2026. Mexico City also maintains the highest average daily contribution base salary in the country at $800.86.

Key sectors driving employment in Mexico City include professional and technical services, credit and financial institutions, and passenger transport. While Baja California shows the highest growth percentage, Mexico City accounts for a larger total number of new formal employment registrations.
