Mexico reports technical trade talks with US remain free of political interference

Mexico's Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard Casaubón, stated that commercial dialogues with the United States are proceeding within a strictly technical sphere, free from regional political friction. Discussions are currently focused on specific issues such as rules of origin and the commercial evolution of steel and aluminum.

Ebrard noted that while the United States has reduced imports from Mexico and Canada, it has increased imports from certain Asian countries. He highlighted that the primary objective for Mexico is to secure a reduction in tariffs imposed under Section 232, which significantly impacts the automotive, steel, and aluminum industries.

Preparations are also underway for the 2027 USMCA review, which is scheduled to formally begin in January. Despite the postponement of the fourth review round in September, bilateral communications remain active, following recent meetings in Washington and during the G20 in Milwaukee.
