Mexico reports third human botfly case and first livestock infection

The health secretariat of Jalisco confirmed a third human case of botfly (myiasis) in 2026. The patient is a 70‑year‑old woman from Autlán de Navarro who was diagnosed promptly, received treatment and is now recovering at home. Authorities noted that the parasite enters through chronic wounds and stressed the need for proper wound care, especially for older adults and people with conditions such as diabetes.

In the municipality of Cuauhtémoc, officials detected the first botfly infection in cattle at the Centro de Bachillerato Tecnológico Agropecuario (CBTA) 90. The municipal Rural Development Director, Claudia Gutiérrez Majalca, said a sanitary fence of 20 kilometres has been established around the affected area while waiting for final confirmation from SENASICA. Additional protocols are being implemented to protect other livestock, pets and wildlife, and the municipality will serve as an information hub for producers in the region.
