Mexico requests extradition of Linda Cristina Pereyra Gálvez

The Mexican government has formally requested the provisional detention and extradition of Linda Cristina Pereyra Gálvez, wife of former Security Secretary Genaro García Luna, from the United States. President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed the request, noting it stems from a long-standing investigation by the Attorney General's Office (FGR) into organized crime, embezzlement, and money laundering.

Pereyra Gálvez is accused of participating in a corruption network that allegedly secured irregular contracts for federal prison equipment, causing damages exceeding 5 billion pesos. The request, made under the extradition treaty between Mexico and the U.S., is currently under review by American authorities.

In a separate legal development in Florida, a civil court ruling from May 2025 ordered Pereyra to pay approximately $1.74 billion to the Mexican government. This amount, significantly higher than the initial $580 million claim, was calculated based on Florida law allowing for triple damages in cases involving criminal enterprises and corruption. The funds are part of Mexico's ongoing efforts to recover assets linked to the García Luna corruption scheme.
