Mexico Requires Mobile Phone Line Registration by June 30, 2026

Mexico’s telecom regulator has mandated that every mobile phone line be registered with verified personal identity by June 30, 2026. Registrants must link the number to official documents such as a CURP or other valid ID. Users who fail to complete the process will face a temporary suspension of traditional mobile services—including voice calls, SMS and mobile data—until the registration is regularised.

The suspension could disrupt access to digital services that rely on SMS verification, such as banking apps, ride‑hailing platforms, and messaging services like WhatsApp. Experts note that internet‑based apps will continue to work over Wi‑Fi, but any function that depends on SMS codes may be limited. Privacy advocates have raised concerns about the handling of biometric data, although regulators say biometrics will not be stored directly by telecom companies. The measure aims to reduce fraud and extortion linked to anonymous phone numbers.
