Mexico rolls out 'Mundial Social' football field program in Puebla and Celaya

The federal "Mundial Social" initiative, championed by President Claudia Sheinbaum and regional officials, is expanding community football facilities across Mexico. In Puebla, the State Secretariat of Sport and Youth organized the "Mundialitos Interdependencias" football‑7 tournaments, involving more than 1,000 public‑sector participants across 78 teams from April 20 to September 4. The program also hosted sports‑promotion activities for over 3,000 students in six schools.

In Celaya, Guanajuato, a new five‑a‑side pitch was inaugurated at the Villas de Celanese with an investment of MXN 1.79 million. The opening, attended by state sport officials and local leaders, is part of a nationwide plan to build or rehabilitate 34 pitches – 27 new and 7 refurbished – to encourage physical activity during the 2026 World Cup.

Both events illustrate the government's use of sport as a tool for social inclusion, health promotion and community cohesion ahead of Mexico’s role as a World Cup host.
