Mexico rolls out new initiatives to curb gender‑based political and sexual violence

The National Electoral Institute (INE) announced two permanent programs aimed at preventing and addressing political violence against women. The measures, ordered by the Electoral Tribunal after a case involving Governor Layda Sansores, will offer re‑empowerment workshops for victims and re‑education sessions for perpetrators. A pilot in October 2025 involved 17 men, of whom seven completed the training, and 58 women, with 39 finishing all activities. The programs are scheduled to launch nationwide in September as part of the INE’s 2026‑2031 strategy.

Separately, the Federal Secretary of Health (SSA) and the government of Puebla signed a protocol to improve care for sexual‑violence victims. The agreement adopts a Decálogo of commitments to guide medical and psychological assistance, treating sexual violence as an emergency. Puebla became the fourth Mexican state to endorse the Decálogo, with participation from IMSS, ISSSTE, state DIF, and the State Human Rights Commission, among others.
