Mexico saves 5 billion pesos by ending 'golden pensions

Legal counsel to the Mexican presidency, Luisa María Alcalde, announced that the federal government has saved roughly 5 billion pesos by eliminating the so‑called “golden pensions” for former officials. She explained that a recent constitutional reform caps pension payments at the salary of the President, applying the most favorable rule for retirees and preventing any pension from exceeding that amount.

Alcalde emphasized that the reform does not revive the former “golden pensions” system; previously some ex‑functionaries received between 400,000 and 1.5 million pesos per month. President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed the amendment and noted that the new limit will remain in force, ending the practice of overly generous retiree benefits.
