Mexico school supply sales decline as families adopt tablets

Merchants participating in the Back to School Fair, organized by the Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco), report that families are shifting their purchasing habits from traditional notebooks to electronic tablets.

Vendors noted that sales of notebooks have decreased by approximately 50 percent compared to pre-pandemic levels due to the increasing use of technology. While notebooks, pens, pencils, and erasers remain the most sought-after items, the digital shift is significantly impacting the volume of traditional school supplies sold.

At the fair, retailers are offering discounts between 20 and 30 percent to attract customers. For primary school students, parents are estimated to spend between 1,300 and 3,000 pesos on necessary supplies.
