Mexico search initiated after tip in missing Nancy Guthrie case

An anonymous tip claimed that the remains of 84‑year‑old Nancy Guthrie, mother of NBC "Today" co‑anchor Savannah Guthrie, were buried in the Mariposa area near the Arizona‑Mexico border. Volunteer group Buscando Corazones Nogales, led by Ramona Guadalupe Ayala Ortiz, organized a rapid search with assistance from the Sonora State Commission for the Search of Missing Persons and local authorities. The team examined the stream‑filled site where unmarked graves have previously been found, but no evidence linked to Guthrie was uncovered.

Nancy Guthrie vanished from her Tucson home on February 1, 2026, after a brief evening with family. Police identified signs of a forced entry, blood droplets and DNA evidence, and reclassified the case as a homicide. The Pima County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI continue to investigate, offering a $1 million reward for information. Savannah Guthrie has spoken publicly about the emotional toll, saying she cries each morning. Law enforcement has also cracked down on trespassing and public‑nuisance incidents by online streamers near the home, resulting in several arrests.
