Mexico secures direct spot in 2026 World Cup knockout stage

Mexico defeated South Korea 1‑0 at the Akron Stadium in Zapopan, earning six points from two wins and becoming the first team to mathematically qualify for the round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup hosted by Mexico. Midfielder Luis Romo opened the scoring early in the second half, netting his fifth goal for the national side.

The victory gave Mexico the Group A lead with a round to spare. South Korea remain on three points and must at least draw with South Africa in their final group match to claim second place. Mexico’s next knockout‑stage match is set for 30 June at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, where they will face one of the third‑placed teams from groups C, E, F, H or I.

The result has sparked celebrations among Mexican fans and reinforces the host nation’s strong start to the tournament.
