Mexico security agencies warn of digital fraud and risky viral challenges ahead of World Cup 2026
The Secretariat of Security and Protection (SSPC) and the Secretariat of Security (SSC) of Mexico City issued a nationwide alert to protect citizens during the Father's Day shopping period and the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup. Authorities warned that criminals are exploiting the holiday and the tournament to launch digital scams, including fake e‑commerce sites, fraudulent travel offers, counterfeit tickets and phishing messages sent via SMS or social media. They advised consumers to verify HTTPS security, use official purchase channels, monitor bank accounts for unauthorized charges and avoid providing personal or financial information to unverified sources.
In a separate warning, the agencies highlighted the rise of dangerous viral challenges related to the World Cup, such as entering restricted stadium areas, performing risky stunts in traffic, climbing structures, vandalism and substance abuse. They urged the public, especially parents, to supervise digital activity, refrain from participating in physically hazardous trends, and report any harmful content. Official contact points include the CDMX Cyber Police (55 5242 5100) and the SSPC cyber‑guide portal.
