Recent data from INEGI’s National Survey of Urban Public Security (ENSU) indicates a widespread reduction in the perception of insecurity across several Mexican municipalities during the second quarter of 2026.

In the State of Mexico, all eight evaluated cities reported improvements. Nezahualcóyotl saw the most significant decrease at 25.6 percent, followed by Atizapán de Zaragoza with 19.2 percent and Naucalpan with 12.1 percent. These improvements occur amid the ongoing operation of the Unified Command in the Eastern Zone, a coordinated security effort involving over 14,000 police officers.

In Tamaulipas, Nuevo Laredo has emerged as a notable success story. President Claudia Sheinbaum highlighted that the city’s perception of insecurity dropped to 26.5 percent in June 2026, down from 34.8 percent in the previous quarter. This represents the second-largest reduction among cities evaluated nationwide. Additionally, Nuevo Laredo recorded the lowest crime rate among major Tamaulipas cities, with 22.5 investigation files per 10,000 inhabitants during the first half of the year. The President attributed these shifts to a combination of security strategies and increased economic prosperity.
