Mexico seeks extradition of Tomás Zerón from Israel

President Claudia Sheinbaum reported that efforts to extradite Tomás Zerón de Lucio from Israel are ongoing but facing delays due to the lack of a bilateral extradition treaty between Mexico and Israel. Zerón, the former director of the Criminal Investigation Agency (AIC), is wanted by Mexican authorities in connection with the 2014 disappearance of 43 students from the Raúl Isidro Burgos Rural Normal School in Ayotzinapa.

Sheinbaum noted that while she personally contacted Israeli President Isaac Herzog to request intervention, the matter falls under the jurisdiction of the Israeli Judiciary. To support the case, the Attorney General's Office (FGR) has submitted over 6,000 pages of documentation translated into English and Hebrew. Zerón faces charges including torture, human rights violations, forced disappearance, embezzlement, and criminal association.
