Mexico seeks strategies to boost grain production and competitiveness

Agricultural experts and government officials in Mexico are calling for enhanced strategies to boost the competitiveness and production of basic grains, such as maize, wheat, and sorghum. During the Expo Agro Internacional Chihuahua 2026, representatives from the National Agricultural Council (CNA) and MINSA noted that while consumption has grown by approximately 4.5 percent annually over the last decade, production has only increased by 0.3 percent. This gap has increased the nation's reliance on imports.

Proposed solutions to reverse this trend include implementing regionalized public policies, increasing technological integration, improving access to financing, and fostering better coordination between producers, distributors, and industry. Experts emphasized the need for rules that allow farmers to plan production cycles with certainty and reduce costs through improved productivity.

In the state of Guerrero, the local and federal governments are also coordinating efforts to strengthen maize and bean production. Officials from the Guerrero Secretariat of Agriculture and the Mexican Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, and Rural Development met to discuss facilitating access to seeds and inputs, addressing drought effects, and providing technical training through institutions like the National Institute of Forestry, Agricultural, and Livestock Research (INIFAP). These initiatives aim to bolster food security and support rural family self-consumption.
