Mexico sees surge in cempasúchil production for Day of the Dead

Agricultural production of cempasúchil (marigold) is seeing significant growth in Mexico ahead of the Day of the Dead season. In Mexico City, specifically within the Xochimilco and Tláhuac regions, production is expected to reach nearly 10 million plants in 2026. This represents a nearly ninefold increase compared to 2019, supported by the Altépetl Bienestar program which provides technical and economic aid to flower-growing families.

In the state of Morelos, cempasúchil production has reached 570.5 tons, making it the fifth largest producer in the country. Key production areas include Jantetelco, Cuautla, and Jiutepec. Local authorities are promoting consumption campaigns to support rural economies and preserve the cultural tradition of using these flowers for altars and offerings.
