Mexico sees tourism and digital payment growth following 2026 World Cup
The 2026 FIFA World Cup has bolstered Mexico's international reputation, creating new opportunities for the tourism and meetings industries. According to tourism officials, the event served as a global showcase for the country's infrastructure, hospitality, and connectivity, potentially attracting future international congresses and corporate conventions.
Data from the first half of 2026 indicates a significant rise in tourism, with over 51 million international travelers visiting Mexico, a 7.7 percent increase compared to the previous year. This influx generated an economic impact exceeding $18.7 billion, with international tourist numbers reaching 24.5 million.
The tournament also acted as a catalyst for digital payment adoption among small businesses. Mercado Pago reported a 95 percent increase in transactions via its Point terminals during the tournament period compared to 2025. Additionally, the number of vendors using these terminals rose by 50 percent, and payment volume grew by 70 percent, as small shops and restaurants adapted to the needs of international visitors.
