Mexico selects ‘Rural’ project for 2027 Venice Biennale
The project ‘Rural’, developed by the architecture firm Macías Peredo Quirarte, has been selected to represent Mexico at the 20th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia in 2027. The announcement was made by Mexico’s Secretariat of Culture and the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature (INBAL).
Led by Salvador Macías, Magui Peredo, Diego Quirarte, and Gonzalo Ugalde, the project aims to shift architectural focus from urban centers toward rural territories. It explores how traditional construction knowledge—specifically regarding local materials, climate adaptation, and ancestral ways of living—can inform contemporary architecture. A central element of the proposal is the study of rural roofs (coverings) as a way to bridge inherited techniques with modern architectural experimentation. The exhibition is scheduled to take place from May 8 to November 21, 2027, in Venice, Italy.
