Mexico Senate Boosts Ties with Egypt in Bilateral Meeting

On 6 August 2026, Senate President Laura Itzel Castillo Juárez met Egyptian Ambassador Amr Abdelazim Elsayed Rifai in Mexico City to deepen the 68‑year diplomatic relationship. The discussion focused on expanding parliamentary dialogue, increasing trade – which reached US$181 million in 2024, making Mexico the leading Latin‑American investor in Egypt – and strengthening cultural and educational exchanges.

Senators also announced the creation of an inter‑parliamentary commission to address common interests. Yeidckol Polevnsky highlighted the presence of Egyptian oil firms in Mexico, the recent revaluation of Egypt’s currency after joining the BRICS, and ongoing archaeological cooperation, such as Mexico’s 20‑year involvement in the rescue of Luxor’s Tomb 39. Both sides reaffirmed support for Egypt’s mediating role in Middle‑East peace efforts.
