Mexico Senate calls for improved migraine diagnosis and treatment

During a legislative forum titled ‘Migraine: A Silent Reality’ held at the Senate of the Republic, Senator Emmanuel Reyes Carmona called for improved diagnosis, expanded access to treatments, and increased research regarding migraines.

Experts noted that the condition affects approximately 20 million people in Mexico. A significant demographic aspect was highlighted: roughly 70 percent of those suffering from this neurological disease are women. Reyes Carmona emphasized that women often face higher burdens because their pain is frequently normalized, dismissed, or attributed to gender prejudices.

The forum aimed to bridge gaps between public institutions, the scientific community, and productive sectors to address the social and professional stigmas associated with the condition. Migraines can cause incapacitating episodes involving nausea, visual disturbances, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound, which can severely disrupt daily life and productivity.
