Mexico Senate hosts Hermila Galindo Chair on women's political participation

The Senate of the Republic in Mexico held the “Cátedra Hermila Galindo” to discuss women’s participation in politics. The event, initiated by Deputy Norma Estela Pimentel Méndez, brought together senators, gender‑equality officials and academic leaders to reflect on the historical struggles and current advancements of women in public life.

Speakers included Senator Lizeth Sánchez García, Senator Ignacio Mier Velazco, and representatives from the Senate’s Gender Equality Units. They highlighted milestones such as women’s suffrage, access to divorce and legal equality, emphasizing that gender issues should transcend partisan politics. The chair, originally created in Puebla, was presented as a platform for collective memory and action to promote substantive gender equality in Mexico’s highest decision‑making bodies.
