Mexico Senate to review request to declare Oaxaca's powers dissolved

The parliamentary group of Movimiento Ciudadano in the Mexican Senate submitted a formal request on 29 July 2026 to place a point of agreement on the agenda of the Permanent Commission. The proposal urges the Senate to exercise the authority granted by article 76, fraction V of the Constitution to declare the disappearance of powers in the state of Oaxaca and to appoint a provisional governor. The request, addressed to Senate president Laura Itzel Castillo Juárez, was issued under the direction of Senator Clemente Castañeda Hoeflich and based on a draft presented by federal deputy Gibrán Ramírez Reyes. It argues that the actions of Governor Salomón Jara Cruz have created a constitutional crisis in Oaxaca, violating federal and state constitutional provisions. No decision has yet been announced by the Senate or the Oaxaca state government.

The move highlights a rare constitutional mechanism that allows the Senate to intervene when state officials are deemed unable to uphold the federal constitutional order, potentially leading to the appointment of an interim governor pending resolution.
