Mexico sentences two men to 67 years for murder of 8-year-old girl
Two men have been sentenced to 67 years and six months in prison for the 2024 murder of 8-year-old Camila Gómez in the state of Guerrero, Mexico. According to the Guerrero state prosecutor's office, the convicts must also pay 5 million pesos (approximately 242,000 euros) in compensation to the victim's family.
The case, which occurred in the city of Taxco, began on March 27, 2024, when the child disappeared while playing outside her home. Her mother received anonymous ransom calls from kidnappers, but the girl was found dead in a black bag a few hours later. Security camera footage helped identify the perpetrators.
Following the discovery of the body, an angry crowd in Taxco blocked main roads and besieged the suspects' home. The suspects were forcibly removed and attacked by citizens with clubs without police intervention. Experts note that such mob violence against those accused of heinous crimes is a frequent phenomenon in Mexico, often attributed to a widespread sense of impunity.
