Mexico Sets Final June 28 Deadline for Bienestar Pension, Tightens IMSS Modalidad 40 Rules

The Mexican Secretariat of Welfare announced that registration for the Pensión Bienestar programs – the senior pension for people 65 and older and the women’s pension for ages 60 to 64 – ends on Sunday, 28 June. On that day all registration modules operate nationwide from 10:00 to 16:00 and accept applicants regardless of the initial letter of their surname. Required documents include birth certificate, official ID, CURP, recent proof of address and a phone number. The senior benefit provides 6,400 pesos every two months, while the women’s benefit offers 3,100 pesos.

Separately, the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS) warned that new eligibility rules now bar certain retirees from enrolling in Modalidad 40, the voluntary continuation of contributions to increase pension amounts. Applicants who have been out of the system for more than 12 months, individuals who remain actively employed, or those lacking at least 52 weeks of contributions in the five years before leaving employment are excluded. The stricter criteria are intended to preserve the financial sustainability of the pension system.
