Mexico sets five tourism records in first half of 2026

Mexico recorded five tourism sector records during the first half of 2026, driven largely by the impact of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. According to the Secretariat of Tourism, the country received 51.1 million international travelers, a 7.7% increase compared to the same period in 2025.

Economic revenue reached $18,781 million. Host cities, including Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey, reported a surge in tourist influx exceeding 36% during the tournament. The cruise tourism sector also hit a record with 6.6 million passengers.

While the US market saw a slight decrease, growth in markets from Asia and Latin America compensated for the decline. Notable increases were seen from Japan (up 131.7% in June), Australia (89.1%), and Colombia (74.4% in June). President Claudia Sheinbaum noted that “Mexico is in fashion,” as the government aims to surpass 48 million international tourists by the end of the year.
