Mexico sorghum production drops 50% amid subsidy limits

In Mexico, Morena deputy Silvia Chávez Garay reported a 50 percent drop in sorghum production during the last agricultural cycle, with yields reaching 500,000 tons compared to historical highs of 1.2 million tons.

Chávez Garay attributed the decline to federal subsidy restrictions, noting that many producers left hectares unplanted because the 'Producción para el Bienestar' support is capped at 20 hectares or less. While she noted that current policies prioritize self-consumption over commercial production, she stated there is no immediate risk of the commercial sector disappearing.

Additionally, the deputy addressed protests by producers regarding falling production, suggesting some demonstrations may be politicized by outside groups.
